The term 'ACTIVE' means it needs to be Power'd by something. Typical units might use a USB cable +5vdc or seperate Wall connected PS to the unit. The term 'Passive' means no Power connection is needed. 'Active' is typically used for stronger and longer cable sends. I always find better success using the last HDMI port of a TV when sending a 1080P signal to them.

Thanks for the clarification. I thought the one I bought was active for some reason. I'm not even sure if I need an active connection.not sure if my displayport is DP or not.

I can't find that info anywhere. Just thought I would give it a try. I might order one online.
