My use cases are: 1. Needing to mute music quickly when a call comes in 2. Playing a long playlist and be nice to know what the current song is but don't want stop what I'm doing and find the Sonos app, be great to just check the menu bar or click once on the menu bar to see the current song. Obviously with multi-rooms and differnet groups this is slightly more complicated that a menu bar control for spotify or iTunes but I think it would be ok to have the menu bar app focus on one selected room/group.
Then make it easy to switch between groups/rooms. As a new user, I can definitely say this would be an appreciated feature - it seems like an obvious omission, which is why I went looking for a way to do it so quickly after getting my first Sonos gear. All it would take is a small and separate menu bar applet with a volume slider, and 3 items on the menu - Play/Pause, Next Track, Previous Track. Please consider this, as well as an official Apple Watch applet.

The sonos app is fantastic, and it seems to me like the overlap between Sonos users and Apple Watch owners might be significant, considering the watch is an always-available remote control. I really loved using my Apple Watch to control my previous AirPlay speakers, and it's one of the more painful aspects of the transition. Volume buttons (but not mute) work when the Sonos app is OPEN, however that function is eliminated the moment you step out of the app. Forward and back definitely work when not in the app.
Well there is another way to control the volume of your reciever using the apple remote app with your second gen apple tv.you can turn on remote speakers setting in itunes, then make sure you select the apple tv as one of your speakers(this should appear as an airplay icon on the bottom right of itunes screan, just click and select apple tv as a speaker), you might have to enable this on apple tv device as well, then in the apple remote software select the itunes library for control instead of apple tv, now you can play your music thru the app and control volume. The kick is that you wont get all the functionality control(see your playlists on the screen, album art etc.you still get a small notification on your tv of what is playing) that you get when selecting apple tv as the library to control. Also if you dont want it to play out of your computure speakers as the same time then you need to only select apple tv as the speaker to control. The only problem with that solution - what if you want to use that other computer/iTunes library for something else. Gen1 at least could control other express nodes on the network but Gen2 is just a player - either alone or as a speaker for ONLY a full blown iTunes client (the Gen1 can't even control a Gen2) - bummer on a big step backwards with something Apple could have just left alone - decisions like this from apple always frustrate me. Same thing with lack of Pandora support.
I get why Apple does it but ultimately it's just silly. So far as I can tell, there is no way to easily use the remote for volume control. On the other hand, the new AppleTV remote is pretty bad compared to the old one - it really only works if you point it directly at the ATV2. The old one (i.e.
With ATV1) you could point anywhere in the room. So you may be better off with a simple programmable remote from Wal Mart. I used the headphone audio output of the TV to go to my amplifier, so that Wal Mart remote can be programmed to just control the volume of the TV and I get the same effect. You probably realize that the remote DID control the volume quite nicely with ATV1.

Just one of the somewhat many reasons why ATV2 seems like a step backwards. I just spent 1 hour and 20 minutes on the phone with Apple support. We came to the same conclusion in our own troublshooting before we even called Apple support.
